Split is an inter-county traffic centre and an extremely visited tourist destination, and it is directly connected by sea to all Central Dalmatian islands as well as to Italy. The core of the city itself is rich in many contents, the most famous of which is Diocletian’s Palace, which was built at the beginning of the 4th century by order of the Roman emperor Diocletian, and since October 26, 1979, it has been under UNESCO protection. Split is surrounded by two large mountains, Mosor with the highest peak of 1330m and Kozjak with the highest peak of 780m. The western part of Split is covered by a forest park, the 178m high Marjan hill, and on it there is a considerable number of small churches, some of which are very old and are valuable archaeological monuments. Marjan is the most important natural resource of Split, a favourite recreation area
for hiking, walking, running, cycling, climbing, swimming, etc., and an increasingly popular tourist attraction because of the surrounding beaches, preserved nature and cultural institutions.
