The western part of Split is covered by a forest park, the 178m high Marjan hill, and on it there is a considerable number of small churches, some of which are very old and are valuable archaeological monuments. Marjan is the most important natural resource of Split, a favourite recreation area
for hiking, walking, running, cycling, climbing, swimming, etc., and an increasingly popular tourist attraction
because of the surrounding beaches, preserved nature and cultural institutions.
